One common hurdle when it comes to health and wellness is staying consistent with our exercise routines. When we are consistent, we can further our progress which will keep us growing and reaching new levels, which in turn helps us to lead healthier, happier, more fulfilled lives.
The longer we stick to our routines, the more momentum we gain, making these habits part of our new normal. Consistency is the key to giving our bodies space to heal and grow, and creating an overall healthy lifestyle for ourselves. Today we will share 5 of our favorite tips on how to stay consistent with exercise and movement.
1. Create a routine that is enjoyable and fun, tailored specifically to yourself.
We can easily go online and find exercise routines, but they won't be unique to you, which is important. If you find the exercises to be boring, too challenging, or not your style, you will be more likely to skip workouts, and lose your consistency. We recommend thinking of things you already enjoy or you could explore new things to figure out what you like if you don't already know.
For example, if you know you like to swim and run, make sure your weekly routine has at least one of those workouts included in it.
2. Schedule it on your calendar.
Make sure you set a date and time for all of your workouts. This will increase your chances of actually showing up to them, and you can also set reminders so that you don't end up forgetting. Most of us keep our calendars on our phones, which is convenient because they are usually always with us.
As an added bonus, you could get a physical calendar to keep at home in a place you know you will see everyday. That way, you can review all of your events for the day, and mentally prepare yourself for the exercise for that day. Studies show that physically writing down a goal makes it more likely to happen.
3. Find a partner.
Having a buddy to workout with can make your time spent exercising more about having fun instead of working hard. Turning it into more of a social activity can make it something you are looking forward to rather than just a task to complete.
You could go with a group of friends to the gym, or take a family member outside for a jog. Even a pet could serve as an exercise companion, by taking the dog out for a brisk walk.
4. Freshen up your workout wardrobe for motivation.
Sometimes having a new pair of sneakers, or a new gym outfit can help you feel good and ready to go crush that next workout. Buying appropriate clothes to workout in can also motivate us to go get our workout in so that we aren't letting our purchases go to waste.
5. Hire a coach.
This one is our favorite tip to gain consistency with exercise routines! When you hire a coach, you are paying for a service which will help you not only with learning the exercises, but also hold you accountable to sticking to your goals and to creating new habits. Your coach will be the ultimate accountability partner because they will discuss your goals with you and provide you with the tools you need to be successful at them.
